Cross trainers/ellipticals, are they good for overall slimming?
My most problematic areas are my legs, especially my thighs, but I really want to just lose weight/become slimmer in general. Are cross trainers good for this? Or do they only target one area? Or is a running machine better?

Yes, it’s very good for it.

Yeah, they’re pretty good. They’re better for people who are out of shape or have joint problems though.
Treadmill is hands down the fastest way to lose weight though

Yup, those sound fine. Do plenty of running/cycling as well. You can’t lose fat in one particular area, so doing cardiovascular exercises is great at burning fat all around.
Also, the whole diet thing, you know yourself 😛

Cross trainers are good because they give you a upper and lower body workout(if you use the handles), or you can just focus on lower body.
They have a much lower impact on all joints(hips ankles & knees), which is good, whether you have damaged joints already or not.
