I believe the usb connector allows you to connect the adapter into a usb spot on a computer and it gives off a signal to allow you to connect wirelessly on your Wii. The lan adapter allows you to connect wired from a router or modem directly into your Wii.

A wireless usb lan adapter is the wireless internet i think.
However the nintendo wifi usb connector is something you can buy ?
Im not 100% sure but my Wii is connected to the internet,
And i play mario kart with japanese people ^_^

I would go and buy a wireless router and then you are able to access wirelessly with many other pieces of equiment and would be a better idea for the future if you decided to make you main pc wireless or bought a laptop.
Nintendo themselves are not recommending using the adapters check it out here http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/wii/en_na/onlineUSB.jsp
