Spanish as the vast majority of Latin America was colonized by Spain.

In all of these countries during that period, maybe 1500 – 1650, any educated person would have understood Latin, and probably also Italian or French. These were the primary languages used to converse between people from different cultures. Spanish was less widely spoken, English, Dutch, and Portuguese at that time would have been understood by relatively few people outside their native countries.
