Beer is one of the most admired drinks around the world. Brewed back since 4000 BC by the Sumerians, beer is also one of the oldest alcoholic beverages still in production. One of the reasons beer is so famous is that it is easy to make and only needs a few ingredients. In fact, there are only four elements in beer: water, yeast, barley, and hops.
All beers use the same ingredients; the only difference is in the amount of ingredients used, plus variations in brewing. For instance, the number of days for the ale fermentation can create major difference in the taste. While the ingredients used are effortless, the standards are high. For instance, the water used to make beer should be purified, and the barley malt used is checked for imperfections in the quality and growth. The primary step in making beer involves the filtering of barley using a pipe, which is then added water to the grains for them to release more sugar. The grains are then mashed in a massive metal pot that breaks down the starches and ferments the mix.
After this, the mix will have to circulate again through a filter with additional water. This step is sparging, and vital to make sure the sugar is extracted completely from the grains. The mix, which is yet to be called beer, is boiled for an hour and a half in a special huge kettle with a double bottom that allows steam to circulate. Hops are added at this moment to give the bitter taste characteristic of beer, and then the mix is drained to divide the liquid from the solids. Once the liquid cools, yeast is added and the preparation is stored for fermentation. The flavors of the beer are added at the end of fermentation.
Making beer is a fragile process, as the liquid changes containers several times, and breweries need to make sure that the mix is not contaminated at any point. Beer can be brewed at your own home with a very simple set of materials accessible at home brewing stores. The basic distinction is that home-brewed beer does not taste the same for every batch, because it is almost unfeasible to get the ingredients matching every time.
