What is the best and easiest way to learn how to play guitar?

I have just bought a second hand electric guitar and an amp from an old workmate and I have absolutely no idea how to start to learn to play it. I’d really love to learn and be able to play properly, not in a band or anything, just in my own privacy, to pass the time and enjoy playing. I can’t afford lessons and was really wondering if anyone knew of any sites or methods or techniques or anything that would help me learn to play as soon as possible and reach a decent standard so I could play along to some of my favourite songs or something equally sad :p I know practice, practice practice…but where do I start, what do I do, what do I practice?

Thanks for listening, I look forward to getting some help with this 🙂

Buy a chord chart and spend at least four hours every day learning the chords.

The vast majority of guitar players are self-taught. Go to a music store and buy a book that uses Tablature notation of a band you like. You can learn about tablature and download free “Tabs” as they are called at various places on the net but one of the best is called olga.net.

    Good luck.

Check out magazines ‘Guitar Techniques’ or ‘Total Guitar’ they give lessons on Jazz, Blues, Rock, etc… and they come with a CD with backing tracks and lessons.
Then practise for the rest of your life.
