How much benadryl should I give my dog? And will it help?
My shiba Inu is scratching a lot around his left side of his mouth with his paw, left eye is watery and seems to be itchy all over. I have read that I can give him benadryl, anyone have any experiences or opinions on if it will help? And how much should I give him? Thanks

You should discuss this with your VET first before medicating your dog.
A better solution would be to find the cause of the problem and eliminate it, if possible. Ussually with dogs, allergies are caused by food allergies.

I would give him half a tablet or if your using liquid use half the regular dosage

Talk to your vet first.

Call your vet and ask. When you call, they can either give you dosage info or tell you if you need to bring him in – he may have something OTHER than allergies.
NEVER give human medications without the consent of a vet.

None. Benadryl is made for humans, not dogs. While I have known a few people who have safely used it, I’ve also known a couple whose dog got sick from it. Your best option of to take him to the vet to see what is causing him to scratch. It could just be allergies, but he could have gotten bitten by something or have an eye infection or worse. When in doubt, always see a vet. Do not try home remedies; it’s not worth the risk.

Dosage every 8 hours
Dogs under 30 lbs and Cats : 10 mg
Dogs 30-50 lbs: 25 mg
Dogs over 50 lbs: 50 mg
It should help with the itching, burt may make him a bit drowsy. But this dosage is safe and effective. Hope it helps you. Good luck
ADD: This is not a guess. I have discussed this with my own vet on several occasions. So no matter how many thumbs down I get, I know this is safe. I would never give an answer such as this if I didn’t know what I was talking about.

you should go to your vet to check and see what pain medication he can provide, that is the smart thing to do. if you do not do this, then get some Aspirin and give your dog one pill in the morning. this should help, it helped my German Shepherd.
but again you should see your vet.

The dosage for dogs is 1mg per pound of your dogs weight. A regular adult benedryl is 25mg. It’s safe to use as long as you give it at the right dose. As always, check with your vet to see if allergies are really the problem.

The dosage is 1 mg.per lb.of body weight every 12 hours. It should help until you can get to a vet. And yes,I have used it many times on my dogs. It’s quite safe.
