Can i send my 2 year old male dog to pup obedience school?

My 2 year old dog never got the chance to go to obedience school and so he is poorly socialized and lacks proper behavior. I adopted him from shelter last month. But i know he was never given any training before.

I want to send my dog to obedience school, but i heard that only pups are sent there. If my dog also joins the pups at obedience school, will there be any problem?

We took our dog but it was just us and him. But I did see the other dogs, and they weren’t puppies, so I’m sure you can take him somewhere.

Obedience school is not someplace you send your dog. It is a class that you take with your dog. You need to learn how to teach the dog to behave. That is what obedience classes are.

There are obedience classes offered for all age ranges and sizes of dogs. It’s important that your dog be with dogs of his same size and age. Call the Humane Society or the County Animal Control – they usually have great information about available obedience classes.

Erm..I don’t think you can send your 2 year old dog to a puppy class. However social skills are easily gained by bringing your dog to a local dog park. If there are no dog parks, let your dog socialize with dogs in your neighbourhood. Training your dog is quite easy. it just takes time and patience (which isn’t so easy. lol).

It is never too late for obedience classes! However, I would strongly encourage you to sign up for a weekly class where YOU take the dog to the class for about an hour once a week for a set number of weeks (6 and 8 week courses are the two most common formats) rather than a “train-and-board” kind of operation where you ship the dog off to a trainer and they train the dog. Classes that you take yourself with the dog encourage bonding between you and your dog and are much more effective as the trainer will be teaching you how to communicate with your dog. Train-and-board deals often result in a dog that listens very well to a dog trainer and then starts to get a little shaky on the commands once they come home because the owner can not deliver the commands in the same tone or with the same authority.

yes, at any age if a dog needs training go through with it. But first call up the obedience school and ask them about their ages. my dog is two and we still might send her to one too. If they do think your dog is too old try another school. And if you are willing to put the money in maybe even a trainer.

Your dog is not an applicance to be sent out to be fixed. You go with your dog to obedience. As your dog is learning how to be obedience you should be learning how to be a calm, confident pack leader.

Dogs of any and all ages can go to obedience class. There are special puppy classes for dogs 10 months and younger for socialization and play time.

Please make sure you find a trainer that uses the “nothing in life is free” method. Do not go to an obedience class that the dogs are hit, injured or abused in any way. Some “trainers” will put a choke collar on a dog and swing the dog by the leash until the dog begins to lose consciousness as a “correction”. Be very careful who you choose.

Your dog is not poorly socialized with behavioral issues because he didn’t learn how to sit. He is poorly socialized because he was not introduced to new things, people, dogs, animals and experiences. He has behavior issues most likely because he needs exercise and discipline.

If you can turn yourself into a calm assertive pack leader you don’t need to worry about your dog. Watch Dog Whisperer on National Geographic.

If you are just looking to socialize your dog, I would recommend taking it to a dog park. That is if one is available around you.

AT YOUR DOG’S AGE ( AND HIS PRIOR SITUATION ) IT WILL BE DIFFICULT TO RETRAIN HIM. BUT, IT CAN BE DONE AS DOGS LOVE TO PLEASE THEIR MASTERS !!YOU WILL JUST HAVE TO WORK MORE WITH HIM AND HAVE PLENTY OF PATIENCE. I’M SURE THERE IS A SCHOOL THAT WILL DO THIS FOR YOU . I JUST RATHER TRAIN MY DOGS MYSELF TO INSURE THAT HE CAN NOT BE SWAYED BY OTHERS.NEEDLESS TO SAY MY WIFE GETS PISSED WHEN SHE HAS TO YELL AT HIM when all i do is point or make hand jesters. HAVE FUN…THEY ARE TRULY “MANS BEST FRIEND”. oh, lord, don’t let her see this !!!

You can enroll your dog in obedience classes at Petco or Petsmart at any age. Obedience training is more for the owners, to learn how to train their dogs, and not so much for the dogs.

You don’t SEND dogs to obedience classes, you TAKE them — a huge percentage of the training that goes on goes on to the PERSON, not the dog. Dogs learn fast – people take forever.

You can TAKE your 2 year old dog to a good, motivational obedience class and learn how to interact and train him and hope he can be better socialized. Sending him, there will be no telling what will happen TO him and it won’t teach you anything so the dog will quickly revert to the previous bad behaviors.

add: Dog parks are a HORRIBLE idea — you will simply be an untrained person with an out of control, unsocialized, fearful-aggressive dog amongst others with very little or no knowledge as well…

Obedience class is for the owner to learn how to train the dog, not a school for dogs. Dogs of any age benefit from training, but socialization is a lot more difficult the older the dog gets.
