   Forms of peanut butter were widely introduced in 1904 at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, although it had been sold as a medical nutritional supplement in St. Louis, Missouri for about 15 years. The modern, non-separating version was invented in 1922 by Joseph L. Rosefield, and became a popular lunch for schoolchildren. Both peanut butter and jelly were packed with United States Army K-rations in World War II. The combination proved so popular that returning GIs made peanut butter and jelly a standard American food.

   Type in “peanut butter and jelly” at http://www.wikipedia.org for a comprehensive explanation of the origins of this sandwich. Apparently it became popular thanks to returning GIs in WWII, who found it to have a relatively long shelf life and be more palatable than other stuff found in K-rations.

   Food network has a series of shows called “Unwrapped”. The episode of “comfort foods” I caught about a year ago talked about this comfort food.

   Peanut butter was actually invented as a health food for people without teeth! A source of protein for the elderly.

   The idea of putting jam on toast is old and England boasts claim to always putting jam on crumpets (something of a cracker/muffin)

   But the research the show did on the combination was inconclusive as to who the ‘inventer’ of the combination was.

   Food historians have seen nothing written about the peanut butter and jelly sandwich before 1940. What we do know is that GI’s in WW 2 were given rations of both peanut butter and jelly. When they returned to the states after the war peanut butter sales and jelly sales both soared.It would seem most likely this would be the birth of the peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
