What is the best and safest way to defrost frozen Salmon Filets?

And how should I cook them? Lemon, salt, pepper, maybe paprika? Can I marinate them while defrosting and what is a good marinate to use?

Hi Cindy,Let them defrost covered either in the fridge or out they shouldn’t take too long .I would marinate them after defrosting, when frozen they are less likely to absorb the marinade, about 20 -30 minutes should be ok. I would not use salt as this will draw out the juices and could dry the fish out. You could use all you have mentioned above with a little oil. Season them after they are cooked for better results. I hope this helps, all the best. Rab

Running cold water, while still in package.
Marinating is better done when thawed.
Flavour will not be absorbed while frozen.
Lemon & dill are good flavours with salmon.
Use juice, dill herbs, & olive oil.
Or find an equivalent salad dressing.
Salmon is best poached in a pan,
Use a little water & cover with a lid or foil.
Add fresh dressing to the water while cooking.
Then thicken afterwards with cornstarch for sauce.

The purpose of thawing foods thoroughly before cooking is to ensure that during cooking the food is heated sufficiently to kill harmful bacteria.

There are three safe ways to defrost food:

    1. In the refrigerator
    2. In cold water
    3. In the microwave

It’s best to plan ahead for slow, safe thawing in the refrigerator. The bottom of the fridge is ideal.

For faster defrosting, place food in a leak proof plastic bag and immerse it in cold water. Change water every 30 minutes. After thawing, cook immediately.

I would not marinade while defrosting. Once defrosted, I grate the peel from a large orange and mix it with salt and pepper. Rub it into the salmon then I broil or micro-cook them for 6 minutes or until they are opaque (white-ish).
Keep an eye on them otherwise as they will dry out quickly. YUM!

I always defrost them in cold water when I need them done quick. You could even do it in the microwave on fan but my microwave leaves a weird taste so I dont use it.. I love sprinkling a mixture of pepper, garlic, lemon and parsley on top of salmon fillets!! I usually grill it and before taking it out like 10 mins before I put on this marinate and then leave it to grill. Its soooooooo yummy, trust me!! Make sure you try it! And yes you can marinate them while defrosting.
