I would look for one at Wal-Mart, Target, K-mart — one that didn’t cost a lot of money.
At 6, he may or may not spend a lot of time with it. Let him begin with a toy.

I completely disagree with the guy who said “let him begin with a toy.”. If you get him a cheap guitar, it won’t sound good and will be harder to play; he’ll get discouraged and quit. If you want him to succeed, out done money into. I recommend a smaller guitar made for children (not “toys” just something made for kids his size). Yamehahs are a good trusted brand. If you don’t mind spending a little more money, get him a cheaper Taylor.

Since he is only 6, i suggest starting him off with a starter pack from guitar center. Definitely start with acoustic, as it helps bring finger strength and dexterity, and will make the goal of playing an electric guitar more satisfying and slightly easier.
Some starter suggestions would be:

It all depends on how much money you want to put into it. Definitely check out more on guitarcenter.com and see what you like.

Go for a cheap one that still sounds pro. Here are the best ones: http://www.toptenservices.net/2009/12/20/top-ten-acoustic-guitars/
I recommend going with an Epiphone DR100. It sounds really good and its just $99. A full size guitar at that price is simply the best. If you can spend a little more, then Fender DG-8S is an excellent choice.
