Is it true that the only way to learn to play guitar is by learning covers?
Example: If I want to play like Steve Vai or Yngwie Malmsteen, then I must learn their songs.

you learn by practicing. If it is your goal to be as good as Vai, you have to measure yourself against him. Only way to do that is to perform the same songs he has played.

Naturally while learning your going to learn other peoples songs. But what you’re really learning is technique. Then you can combine that with musical theory to play “like” anyone you want. But ideally you want to create your own sound/style.
