Can I learn to play guitar in 5 months?

I’m planning to lead worship at camp this year, and I need to know basic chords. I’ll be lead singer as well, so it won’t be necessary for me to shred or anything. Is it totally unrealistic to learn how to play in 5 months if I practice often?

You could learn to play pretty decently if you practice an hour or two a day.
I’ve been playing for about a year and a half but I still can’t sing and play at the same time.
That takes more concentration than I have in me. lol
I think and hope you can do it; but don’t be crushed if you can’t.
    God bless!!

Hi Katie, I think you can definitely learn to play in 5 months. I also lead worship every Sunday and it took me much less than 5 months to be able to play the basic chords and accompanying songs.

Here’s a resource that might help in case you need it:

PluckandPlayGuitar has free video based lessons for absolute beginners and assume you know nothing or close to nothing.

It takes you step by step through the basic guitar chords one by one. There’s also lesson on guitar scales, techniques and some easy songs to play.

    Katie,

Not unrealistic at all. Here’s how to learn quickly and have fun doing it:

    1. First make a short list of your favorite pop/rock (or any genre) songs. Maybe 10.
    2. Look up chords for these on the web.
    3. Pick out the one with the fewest number of chords
    4. Look up those chords and learn how to finger them
    5. Play that song every day for a week or two, and you’ll KNOW those chords by heart.
    6. Rinse and Repeat

    Good Luck,
    John
