It’s good to start off with an acoustic guitar, but you can start with any type you want. You should have a guitar with steel strings instead of plastic (Nylon) strings because it would be easy to get use to if you want to play electric, etc.
This was my first guitar and it’s amazing. Great sound and great look.
Negative side to it is that it gets out of tune and the 6th string buzzs a lot.
Overall it’s a great guitar and a great price as well.

For your first guitar you should never worry about getting a really good one. My first one was very cheap, very beginner, I got it from http://www.musiciansfriend.com for about $40. It is always best to learn from a teacher but if you are teaching yourself I would suggest purchasing some books like The First Lessons: Beginning Guitar and some CDs/DVDs. Youtube is a good place to go for learning full songs, but its best to learn your basic chords first. Never try to accomplish intermediate of advanced songs first. Always start with beginner songs. My first songs in order were intro to iron man, amazing grace, the verses of Send it On, flyleaf- there for you, and then Down to Earth by Jackie Boyz. As you get better and master more chords you can try learning more challenging songs. Also, buy yourself a Capo. It will come in handy when you want to learn a specific song. I don’t have one yet witch limits the songs I can learn by A LOT!

PluckandPlayGuitar has free video based lessons for absolute beginners and assume you know nothing or close to nothing.
It takes you step by step through the basic guitar chords one by one. There’s also lessons on guitar scales, techniques and some easy songs to play.

Yeah I agree, acoustic guitars are aways good to start on. Once you’re solid on an acoustic, you’ll be solid on an electric. You can buy an Epiphone, Ibanez, Yamaha, Taylor, or Martin. All good brands, and get a guitar that you like. Eventually you can upgrade to a higher end guitar, but I suggest getting an inexpensive guitar because after you get good, you’ll know more about guitars and look for one that suites you and your style. For now, you just want to learn the notes, chords, songs, and basically the guitar in general.
Acoustic guitars actually builds fretting hand strength because the strings are thick and require a little more strength. Electric guitars usually have much thinner strings. Fretting hand strength is very important!
I don’t know what kind of guitarist you want to be. Acoustic or electric. Either way, go with an acoustic guitar. Remember to keep it in good condition. Polish it and keep it away from warm temperatures. Acoustic guitars require more care as they can dry out. Buy a guitar humidifier and use it often.
Also, if you don’t have any, pick up a couple of beginner guitar books. Look through them, pay attention to their saying, and follow the instructions and exercise thoroughly. Also, get a teacher. It’s very important that you get an instructor so he can point out some quirky habits that are very common for beginners.
Things you’ll want to pick up:
– Capo
– Tuner
– Guitar case (a hard one)
– Strings
– String winder/cutter
– Picks
– Cleaning cloth
– Humidifier
– Guitar Strap
– Cable (if you get one that can be plugged into amps)
I’m glad you’re choosing the guitar. It’s an amazing choice of instrument. Best of luck to you!
